Coolant

Engine Coolant Replacement and Protection:

The term engine coolant is the generally accepted term for the liquid that absorbs heat from the engine and releases it through the radiator. The very same liquid also has properties to prevent the engine cooling system from freezing up.  As the engine coolant circulates through the cooling system it transfers heat to the radiator.  The heated radiator dissipates the heat into the air as the car moves down the road. The cooled liquid is fed back to the engine through the cooling system. The cycle repeats the entire time the engine is running. Coolant replacement is needed if the PH levels or protective qualities are out of range. The typical coolant replacement intervals are between two and four years, depending on use. Even so-called “long-life coolants” have been known to lose their effectiveness prematurely.  The long-life coolants also become contaminated with metals as the water pump and water pass across their surfaces and for this reason, it needs to be replaced.

See your owner’s manual or call one of our service advisers for more information about your engine coolant. Low and used coolant also causes your vehicle to be less fuel-efficient. In some cases this can decrease your miles per gallon by up to 10%. If your coolant is left unchanged for too long may result in a chemical condition known as electrolysis, this can result in costly repairs or even an engine replacement.

Engine Coolant has an Environmental Impact:

From a safety standpoint, an overheated engine won’t pose a problem for other motorists but could leave you stranded with no warning. From an environmental point of view, engine coolant poses a significant impact. Because leaking engine coolant is poisonous and could be ingested by children, pets, and other animals. Precision Incorporated disposes of all refuse engine coolant with the help of a professional recycling service so rest assured we are doing all we can to protect the environment from this hazardous product.
